CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham
Age: 33
Canon: The Three Musketeers (2011 movie)
Canon Point: post-movie
Character Information:
The Three Musketeers (2011) @ Wikipedia
George Villiers @ Wikipedia

Note: The role of George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham, as presented in Paul W.S. Anderson's The Three Musketeers movie has remarkably little in common with the role of George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham, as presented in Alexandre Dumas' original novel of the same name. They are, however, both meant to be loose interpretations of the historical George Villiers, first Duke of Buckingham, as presented by European history itself. Since the movie supplies exactly zero alternatives to Buckingham's background story I will be taking the liberty of assuming that it roughly corresponds to his historical counterpart, so as to give the poor pompous windbag some origin legs to stand on.

Personality:

Buckingham loves a good show above all things, ideally with himself as the centrepiece. Where is the fun in doing anything at all, if it can't be done bigger and better than anything that ever came before it! He lives for the gasps of the big reveal, and will happily monologue about the details of his evil plans, just to bask in his own cleverness, delivered in the sound of his own voice at that. Now, credit where credit is due, he will put off any such displays until after his schemes have been set in motion, but he is rarely one to work in the metaphorical shadows for too long; they do nothing to flatter his latest and most glorious outfit, after all.

( He will, for instance, happily boast to one of his political enemies that he knows exactly where they hide their private wine stash. Buckingham was told by his spy, you see, and he would loathe his enemy to be unaware of how very sneakily and deviously he has succeeded in planting such a creature in their midst. )

At the mere age of thirty George Villiers has risen from a mere knight's son to England's de facto ruler. Educated for the life of a courtier Buckingham did always have a keen eye and a quick tongue to help him navigate London's society. He eventually gained the king's attention (and later infatuation), and came out on top in the end; in part with the helping hands, in part on the strained backs of others.

In this scenario his low birth may grant him the extraordinary ability to tie his own shoelaces, yet it has done little to humble him: On the contrary, his rapid social climb has only fueled his ego, and the firm believe in his own magnificence. The duke may be shown to demonstrate appropriate wariness of villains whose true colours others fail to perceive, yet he falls victims to their plans just the same, stumbling as he still thinks himself one step ahead of them.

However, rather than underestimating the skills of others, his greater flaw lies in overestimating his own prowess. No scene shows this quite as plainly as the moment his quarters are under enemy attack, from a fully armed airship no less. Retreat is not a word in the duke's vocabulary, and so he fights back, two pistols in hand, against a flying battleship armed with canons, bombs, and a flamethrower. He survives the encounter, which to him only goes to prove what he suspected all along: That he is a handsome god with no such absurd concerns as mortality. Furthermore the destruction of half his fortress is a laughably minor setback on the way towards his eventual victory!

(Defeat is, for better or worse, not a word in the duke's vocabulary either; this is perhaps starting to come as a surprise, as even his enemies do admit that Buckingham has a way with words, at least the ones he does keep in storage.)

At the heart of everything, so Buckingham even muses himself, the duke sees life as little more than a very long-lasting game. He therefore strives to amuse himself as much as possible, and eventually emerge as the fabulous winner, whatever that may entail at any given stage or round of the process. Correspondingly he casts other people as players or pieces, and spares them little thought or attention if they have no value as challengers, entertainment, or resource. An example might be his ongoing fight with the eponymous Three Musketeers, of which he only ever seems to acknowledge their leader Athos (by name or otherwise). He all but utterly disregards the other, viewing them as little more than accessories in an exciting tête-à-tête between him and Athos alone.

All in all Buckingham is only as dangerous as boredom and the need to emerge triumphant let him become. Often donning the most impressive wardrobe, and delivering the sharper and wittier side of a conversation is enough to provide all the satisfaction he seeks. His enemies needn't be broken and undone to appease him: On the contrary, dead men tell no tales, and having his victories go entirely unsung simply won't do. At one point he merely incapacitates his foes, where he could easily take their lives instead, but then, wouldn't it be so much better to allow them an opportunity for a thrilling rematch? Another time he takes a prisoner, and in front of his eyes spreads out torture instruments like a peacock spreads his feathers. Yet the prisoner seems to accept his fate in (impolitely not the least bit conversational) silence, and Buckingham quickly shows his disappointment, suddenly not the least bit interested in following through with his threat.
